Massive Blaze Destroys Hardware Store and Warehouse in Akhnoor, Causing Extensive Losses
A massive fire engulfed a hardware store and adjoining warehouse in Akhnoor, Jammu and Kashmir, causing losses worth several lakhs. Fire tenders battled flames for hours as thick smoke spread across the area. No casualties were reported, while authorities suspect a short circuit and have launched a detailed investigation.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire erupted suddenly and spread with alarming speed through the shop premises, which were stocked with paint, chemicals, and other highly inflammable hardware materials. Within minutes, the entire establishment was engulfed in towering flames, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky that were visible from several kilometres away.
Multiple fire tenders were immediately deployed to the site, and firefighting teams battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Officials stated that the primary challenge was preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent commercial establishments. Police personnel and civil administration officials also reached the location to oversee the emergency response and coordinate containment efforts.
No casualties have been reported so far. However, the fire completely destroyed the entire stock of goods, furniture, and billing records stored within the premises, leading to severe financial losses for the establishment.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. A short circuit is suspected as a possible trigger, although authorities have initiated a formal investigation to examine all potential causes and rule out other possibilities. A senior official at the scene confirmed that a detailed inquiry is underway, along with an assessment of structural damage to the building.
The incident caused significant disruption in Akhnoor’s main market area, with the road outside the affected shop blocked from both sides to ensure the smooth movement of fire engines. Traffic movement on the main road was also affected for a considerable duration before normalcy was gradually restored.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of commercial hubs handling inflammable materials and underscores the urgent need for stringent fire safety compliance in densely populated market areas.
